The Czech country has a rich and motley history. People, who had come from all parts of the world, built and decorated hundreds of chateaus, churches and monasteries here, participating thus in forming the overall architectural image of our towns and cities. Twelve sites have already been put on the UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, others are pursuing that.
Unique mineral streams rise in the territory of the country, and these have been used for curing purposes already since the beginning of the 15th century. The spa towns are situated in picturesque landscape areas and are attractive for their urban conception and specific spa architecture. Some spa houses boast about their original accessories.
The Czech lands boast an extraordinarily high number of cultural monuments. Over 2,000 preserved castles and chateaux (more per square mile than any other country in the world!) represent an important part of the national cultural heritage, both in terms of their number and in terms of their historical and artistic value; their significance transcends national borders, and more than a few of these structures are important even in the global cultural context.
Publicly accessible castles and chateaux are a testament to the high level of onetime builders’ art and often come equipped with a wealth of artistic treasures. Their interior furnishings are complemented by valuable collections of pictures, weaponry, porcelain, glass, and fine crafts. Nearly 60 castles, chateaux and castle ruins are currently listed in the Register of National Cultural Monuments; several are included in the UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites.
There is more to the Czech Republic than just Prague! The country’s smaller towns have plenty to offer visitors, who will be impressed by their well-preserved historical centers and carefully maintained monuments whose importance often transcends regional borders. Some of these towns were declared urban monument reservations or even included on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage.
